Since the Fabbri family beagn their business in 1905 the recipe of their unique Amarena Fabbri cherries remains unchanged.
Nicola Fabbri the current head of the Fabbri family continues to lead with passion his family's Bologna based business.
In the early 1900’s Gennaro Fabbri gave the first blue and white jar to his wife, Rachele, as a sign of his love and his appreciation for having created her amarena-cherry recipe. But little did he know that that one small gesture would have given the world the joy of such a unique flavour for many generations to come.
Gennaro was born in the Ferrara area on a cold day in January 1860 and so owes his name not to Neapolitan roots, but to the month in which he entered the world. As a young man, he held many jobs and stood out for his entrepreneurial spirit, his skill and, above all, his ideas. The chance to go out on his own presented itself in 1905 at the age of 45, when he already had two sons, Aldo and Romeo.
There was a small general store with wine cellar in Portomaggiore. The business was for sale, but Gennaro didn’t have enough money. So his older brother came to his aid, giving him a loan that Gennaro was able to quickly repay.
Gennaro converted the general store into a shop for the production and sale of liqueurs. The production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic syrups began in the 1920s. It was during this period that Fabbri came out with the company’s most famous product, “Marena con frutto”, inspired by a recipe of Gennaro Fabbri’s wife.
With the opening of the Bologna facilities, the idea of syrups took full form, with mint and grenadine leading the way. Then came the famous amarena cherry syrup, inspired by a recipe created by Gennaro Fabbri’s wife, Rachele Buriani. Originally sold in demijohns, the product was to then bring Fabbri great fame and fortune with its unmistakable white and blue ceramic jar.
Sons Romeo and Aldo were to become increasingly active in developing the businesses, so much so that the name of the company was changed to “Ditta G. Fabbri di Aldo e Romeo Fabbri” in 1933. Shortly prior to his death, Gennaro acquired Bar Centrale, which his sons transformed into an elegant shop where people could sample and purchase Fabbri products. A unique luxury for the times, the shop was open 24 hours a day, making it an ideal meeting place for the city’s youth and high society.
Since the early days the Fabbri family has worked tirelessly with drive and ambition to create what is now one of the most recognised food brands across Italy and indeed across the world. Today Mr Nicola Fabbri leads the company with an entrepreneurial spirit and energy that resembles his ancestor Gennaro.
Here at Benfatti we are passionate about small artisan producers but also admire family businesses that started small (just like Fabbri) and then worked very hard to chase their dreams, create iconic foods and offer so much to Italian gastronomy which now brings joy to food lovers all over the world.
